It’s only fair that any kid can play sport, regardless of their postcode or their parent’s bank balance. This is why we pressured David Crisafulli’s LNP Government to not scrap Qld Labor’s $200 sport vouchers program.
The LNP have agreed to keep the program going, but this wouldn’t have been possible without the Opposition’s advocacy and the thousands of Queenslanders who signed our petition.
FairPlay (renamed Play On!) vouchers help cover the cost of membership, registration or participation fees with registered activity providers, taking financial pressure off parents and legal guardians for their kids’ sport.
In 2024 the Miles Government increased funding, delivering $200 vouchers as part of its broader cost-of-living relief measures. This gave 200,000 kids across the state the chance to play sport.
The program has been welcomed by sports clubs and parents all over Queensland, with more and more kids getting the exercise they need for healthy development each year.
When I held the position of Treasurer at Victor Scouts for 3 years, I saw first hand how these vouchers helped families to get involved in sport and recreation.
For our little association, the 10 extra kids participating helped to keep our Scout Group viable.
It was good for the kids, good for the families and good for our Scout Group.
But sport is more than just physical exercise for children.
Other key benefits include improved mental health, opportunities for social development and the creation of healthy habits for life. With $200 sport vouchers, countless Queensland kids don’t have to miss out on these benefits.
Additionally, parents doing it tough won’t have to choose between their kids’ sport and putting food on the table. For so many families, $200 is the difference between getting their children involved in something they love and having to say no.
Attempts to axe this successful program aren’t just policy; they’re a direct blow to young Queenslanders whose parents are already struggling to make ends meet. Without this winning program, Queensland families lose.
Queensland parents and sport providers told the LNP what kids sport vouchers meant for them, their families and their clubs. We all told the Qld Government we would fight for our kids, and they listened.
We held to Government to account and this is our win.
Thank you to everyone who signed our petition and stood with us. Together we can hold this Government to account and continue fighting for what matters.
